The interface standard for serial transmission, RS232, was adopted in 1969. However, before and after adoption, this interface has been so popular that several variants have arisen. In various ways, they have attempted to burst the limits set by RS232 in terms of cable length and speed, where the current limit is 15 meters, while the transmission rate is at most 921.6 Kbit / sec for RS232.

To break the 15 m limit, the RS422 recommendation was adopted. It shows how using balanced signals can be communicated over distances up to 1200 meters and up to 10 Mbit / sec. While RS232 is about the connection between one transmitter and one receiver, "point to point", then from each output on RS422 data can be communicated to 10 inputs. In practice, however, almost all RS422 interfaces are used for point-to-point connections. Only with the RS485 standard was there a recommendation in 1983 that shows how both more transmitters and several receivers can communicate over a few transmission lines.
